I have just acquired an HP OfficeJet 3831. I notice it takes two ink cartridges. As I don't want to print in colour, can I just buy the black ink cartridge (HP302)? thanks. Marsha.

Hi Marsha, you would need both cartridges with some ink in them as the printer will refuse to print with just a black cartridge in there.

Hi there, technically they should work but you may need to reset the printer to default settings and reinstall everything because I think it would still be classed as an instant ink printer.

Will HP compatible inks work in my Envy 4527 without an instant print subscription?

Hi there, if you have an instant print subscription (ie. your printer is an activated instant ink printer) then only instant inks will work and our compatibles wouldn't work. If you've never used the instant ink service with your printer then they will work correctly. In other words, once the instant ink service is activated in a printer, it locks that printer down and prevents any other ink cartridges from working correctly, even HP inks not sent via the instant ink subscription will not work. It is possible to end an instant ink subscription and remove it from the program which should then allow you to use any inks again.
