A friend of mine bought a toner (brother hl 3140cw) from london but it doesn't fit it. The one my friend bought is a bit smaller than the one I have been using, even though they bear the same brand name and number.

Sometimes the drum can be detached from the toner cartridge, it's possible that your friends larger toner still has a drum attached to it and that's why it looks different. Other than that it could be the wrong item for the printer.
