I don't understand, what is a drum unit? Is this the same as a toner cartridge?

No, a drum unit is different to a toner, but they are both required to keep your printer working.

A toner cartridge is a container, which hold the tower powder. A drum unit is what fuses the toner powder on to the paper when printing.  A drum unit will usually last a lot longer and not have to be replaced as often as the toner cartridge. For example, the Brother DR6000 will last 20,000 cycles before it needs to be replaced with a new one.
