Hi there, thanks for your question.
I'll do my best to explain and help.
The brand of generic / compatible toners that you've previously used HCF280X/CE505X indicate that that cartridge can be used in 2 very different printer models. They can be used in your M401dn but also printers that take the CE505X such as the LaserJet P2055. Unfortunately the original HP CE505X aren't interchangeable and won't work / fit in both M401DN and P2055 printers.
For your M401dn you will only be able to use the CF280X original HP cartridges which is why you're having trouble trying to install the CE505X cartridges.
Also just to add, the CE505XD has the 'D' which denotes a dual pack but the 'XC' is a contract toner which will only work in printers that are 'managed print' machines (toners provided under a contract).
So, to summarise, you need to make sure you use a HP CF280X toner and that you are only given one that is an 'X' and not and 'XC' (XD which are the dual packs, are fine).
I hope this helps, but if you have more questions let me know.
Thanks,
Stu.
Thanks for your question. It sounds like both of the suppliers that you previously used are using the same manufacturer and you basically got the same or similar product. I can also see from the references that the cartridge represents 2 ranges of cartridges (CE505X and the CF280X). These go in very different printers which could be why the shape isn't correct for your machine.
We don't list ours against both machines / models so our cartridges are only manufactured for your machine. For that reason I don't think you'll have the same issue. However, I'll ask one of the team to check with the manufacturer and come back to you asap.
Here is the product that we sell for the LaserJet Pro 400 M401dne https://www.tonergiant.co.uk/product/Compatible-HP-80X-High-Capacity-Black-Toner-Cartridge-RECF280X-19553/
