The Canon PIXMA MX475 uses specific inks including one black PG-540 ink cartridge and one colour CL-541 ink cartridge. You need both black and tri-colour ink cartridges for this model to work
correctly or you will need to purchase new replacement inks. Both colour and black inks are used during the printing and process, so the printer will stop working once either cartridge is empty.

Hi Kate, the Canon MX475 takes 2 ink cartridges (1 colour cartridge and 1 black cartridge). You need both installed for the printer to work. There is Canon paper available, but it will take any paper suitable for an inkjet printer.

Can you mix the 540 black ink with a 541xl?
I have tried this but the screen states 'check the ink'.

Hi there, yes you should be able to mix them with no issues. The error code refers to the contacts on the cartridge and the printer not connecting properly. If you check the cartridge and gently wipe down the gold contacts and try to reinstall. Hopefully, that will fix the issue for you. If not, you may have a faulty cartridge.
