The DR3200 drum unit is a maintenance item for your MFC8840 printer and it's job is to move the toner from the toner cartridge and roll it onto the paper using an electrical charge on it's metal cylinder. If your printer is asking you to replace its drum unit, you may still be able to continue printing but you'll quickly start to have issues with your prints being light or messy.
Once the drum unit is at the end of its life, print quality will decline. Also the drum unit is attached to the toner when you replace it so if you have an old or faulty drum and you don't replace it when asked, it can potentially damage the toner as well.
