If your Brother HL1870N printer is telling you to replace the DR7000 drum unit, it should allow you to continue to print for a short amount of time but the chances are that the quality of your prints will begin to deteriorate, and you will notice that prints come out very faint or blotchy.
The drum unit passes the toner from the cartridge to the page using an electrical charge created by the laser in the printer. Once it needs replacing, toner may be failing to attach to it correctly and that's when you will start to see poor quality prints. This can also occur when the drum unit is damaged. Whilst you may be able to still print, we recommend that you replace the drum unit as soon as the printer indicates a replacement is needed.
