Why do the black and colour cartridges have different page yields?

Hello there, the reason that the colour cartridges usually hold less ink is because the black cartridges are usually used more when printing compared to the coloured cartridges. So most manufacturers will put more ink within the black ink cartridges so that you have less chance of running out of the black before the coloured cartridges.
